Care for your car

Regular Maintenance

Professional and experienced advice on keeping your car running smoothly and finding minor faults before they become major headaches.

At 1st Class Garage we understand that all makes of car have their own individual quirks. If the information on this web site doesn't help you solve your particular problem, give us a call. We are always happy to give advice over the phone, and may be able to put your mind at ease.

Finding possible faults early

There are a few simple things you can do to help prolong the life of your car by spotting any problems at an early stage.

It is important to regularly check your tyre pressure. A 2- or 3-pound drop in tyre pressure will increase the rolling resistance of a tyre. This can cause your car to drag slightly in the direction of that wheel, and can also increase fuel consumption, as it takes a little bit more power to compensate for this drag.

Most cars have a sticker on the inside of the driver's door advising on the correct tyre pressure for the vehicle. This information is also available in your car's handbook. If you're unsure, give us a call at the garage, where we have the data manuals available.

It is also wise to check under the bonnet of your car once a week. Don't rely solely on gauges and warning lights to tell you about a possible problem, because by the time these lights come on, the problem may have existed for some time. At least once a week, you should check your levels of water, the cooling system, and the oil.

Cooling systems should be checked when cold. The best time to check is first thing in the morning.

It is very important to check your oil levels regularly. Although an engine will run with almost no oil in it, doing this will seriously damage your engine.

If you find that you are having to top up water or oil every week when you check under the bonnet, then it is likely that there is a leak, as your car should not be consuming that amount of fluid. Checking under the bonnet of your car regularly means you can pinpoint problems like this and get them remedied before they become expensive to repair.

Recommended Car Products

Engine flush

If a car hasn't been regularly maintained and the oil is quite black, particularly on diesels, it needs to be flushed out. If an engine has not been properly flushed, every time you replace the oil you are putting clean oil into a dirty engine. A good engine flush will prolong the life of your engine, and we will do this as part of our full service. At 1st Class Garage, we use Forte engine cleaner when flushing engines and find it works extremely well.

Fuel additives

There are fuel additives that we use to keep the valves and the inside of the fuel systems clean. These additives are available for both diesel and petrol engines, and are also from Forte.

Car cleaning products

For car care we recommend Miracle Dry Wash. This product uses no water, which is particularly useful in this time of water shortage, with the government proposing a ban on car washing. At 1st Class Garage, we have found that Miracle Dry Wash has reduced our car cleaning time by about 4 minutes.

Speed camera detectors

Speed camera detectors don't just exist to save you a fine and possible points off your license. At 1st Class Garage, we believe they create better drivers by making motorists more aware of the need for obeying the speed limit. We recommend and stock Micro Fuzion GPS Speed Camera Detectors. These products are legal, and we feel they really do have a part to play in making our roads safer.
